Overview
Electoral fraud, also known as election manipulation or voter fraud, refers to the illegal interference with the process of an election, aiming to increase the vote share of a favored candidate or depress the vote share of rival candidates. This phenomenon varies in definition and scope across countries, but its goal is often to subvert the democratic process. According to the OSCE, electoral fraud can take many forms. The international community has responded by developing guidelines and standards for democratic elections, such as the United Nations' guidelines for democratic elections. However, the fight against electoral fraud remains an ongoing challenge, requiring continuous vigilance and cooperation among governments, civil society, and the private sector. For instance, the ACLU has worked to increase voter access and participation in several United States states, including through the implementation of automatic voter registration systems.
